Sustainability blogpost 6

During this quarter long sustainability project my family and I have gained a lot from it. We have become more sustainable and healthier than we have ever been. We have met most of my goals like not using paper plates which he have not used and also not washing half loads. Also our family has been more productive in carpooling, now every Tuesday and Thursday we have been carpooling to practice and home. This saves gas for both of the families involved since gas is about 4 dollars a gallon. My dad and I have been taking shorter showers now since I told him how much water we save. I think that our family is really trying to fit into the sustainability mold because when my mom is out grocery shopping she is buying organic foods and making healthier selections on the foods we eat for dinner. Also we are making strides towards solar water heating in our house and also thinking about electric cars, another thing is when I am out clothes shopping I try to buy organic clothes but It can be expensive. The hardest thing about this project had to be shortening our showers to 3 minutes, it was hard because we are used to long hot showers. After a while your body gets used to it and it is not that hard to do. This project was great for our family because we are eating a lot healthier and organic fruits and drinks just taste that much fresher and better. I like drinking organic fruit smoothies in the morning because they wake me up and taste great. Some disadvantages to this project are that organic and local foods cost more but my family is willing to pay extra to have fresh and fruit with no pesticides. Whenever my mom cooked dinner we ate with ceramic plates not paper this way we are not killing trees and saving money on not buying paper plates. A disadvantage to this is that we have to wash them more often and that our dishwasher uses up a lot of water. I hope my family continues our journey to becoming sustainable because we are becoming healthier and saving money in the long run. If just everyone started to become a little more sustainable our earth could be that much cleaner and be saving that many trees and that much water. I wish that Punahou School would take sustainability more serious in the snack bar. Even though they launched the pilot they still are serving hot pocket's on a regular basis now. I hope they take a step into having healthier foods especially in the lunch lines where you purchase hot foods. So far this quarter long project has been a real plus for my family and I and I really hope that we can keep it up.

Sustainability blogpost 5

This week I have not done really anything new to be more sustainable. I have just been doing the usual stuff that I have been doing over the last 5 cycles. There is one thing that I did was I recycled my cans down at the recycle place. We did not get very much money but we did contribute to the cause. Even though I did not do anything new this cycle I have changed a lot of my habits. For example eating salad almost everyday, Drinking Water, juice, and milk instead of soda, and not eating as much ice cream and junk food at the cafeteria. Another thing I changed about my diet was that at lunch this past week I have been eating the turkey sandwich on cibatta bread. This sandwich is surprisingly good and is new because the cafeteria launched the new pilot lunch menu.

Sustainability blogpost 4

This past week I really have not done anything new to be more sustainable. I have pretty much just done the same things I have been doing. There is one thing that I did well, I have not drank anything but water, orange juice, fruit smoothie, or milk in this past week that means no soda. This past week had to have been the healthiest foods I ate. I had salad 4 days of the week and fruits and vegetables everyday this week. Also to go along with not eating any ice cream at the snack bar or at home. For dinner I had BBQ chicken and AHI two nights. On Friday my friends and I caught the bus all over the place to save gas and also because there was no one to drive us. Also on Saturday we carpooled from Punahou to my friends house and back. These two days we saved a lot of gas and I will try to catch the bus more to save gas and to not be an inconvenience to my parents. My showers this week were good because all of my showers were under 3 minutes. I calculated my shower and for every minute in the shower I am using up right around 6 liters, so my normal 8-minute shower uses up 48 liters and my new shower uses up 18 liters. If you do the math then I am saving 30 liters for every shower. The average person uses about 466 liters per day so if I showered for 3 minutes 12 times I would save enough water for an average person to use, an just imagine if everyone did this we would save an incredible amount of water.

Here is the link to the water usage page.

Sustainability blogpost 3

Here are some pictures of things that i purchased throughout the week. Here is the tag of an organic cotton shirt that i bought

` This is an fresh ahi salad i bought from Aloha salad which is made locally

Here is a picture of organic granola that i eat with my yogurt

This is an organic acai smoothie that I drink every morning to get my daily servings of fruit

This past week I was pretty sustainable because I drank organic smoothies everyday and also drank organic soymilk. 7 out of 10 showers I took this week at home were 3 minutes or less and the other 2 I just forgot about it and after I cam out I remembered, but I am saving over 50 percent of water that I use in my showers by doing this. During this week we did not use paper plates or cups at all, we only used ceramic and glass cups.
This week at the market we bought organic smoothies, organic yogurt, and organic granola, we also bought fresh fruits like pineapple and strawberry. On Friday we carpooled to the volley and back which saved some gas.
On Friday I attended the sustainability fair on Rice field, which I enjoyed a lot because I learned a whole bunch of ways I can be more sustainable at home and school. One thing I am really interested in is solar water heating because it is not that expensive and all my water can be powered by solar and a lot of electricity is used to heat water. Also at the fair I at a watermelon which was probably the best watermelon I ate in a long time and maybe because it was organic it just tasted that much better. I am thinking about getting a worm bin inside our house but I don’t know if my parents will allow because of the mess it can cause.

sustainability blog post #2

So far this week we have been dong pretty good because I have cut down on my showers from 8 minutes to 3 minutes. I have not measure how much water I am exactly saving but I know that I am saving quite a bit, this weekend I plan to calculate how much water I am exactly saving. I have not got my parents to jump on the bandwagon to take shorter showers but I think my dad will decide to so we will save double the water. Also this week I have not washed any of my clothes yet so I don’t have any half loads and waste water, I plan to wash my clothes on the weekend in a full load. We also have not washed any half loads of dished, all full loads. This week we used are hard plates and cups not paper plates and plastic cups, this way we can save a lot of tree's and money.
On Sunday we were at the market and we purchased organic smoothies from times, even though they cost quite a bit of money we are willing to spend it if it is healthy and organic. We also bought organic soymilk and fresh fruits to eat during the week. My Mom has been buying this salad and sushi combo from her cafeteria at work, which is made by the cafeteria so it has to be fresh, and it is good. I have not bought any new organic clothes yet because I have not seen any but I will look for some if it is cheap enough.
This week we did take one car two days this week that cuts down our oil consumption and traffic by half. If we can continue this or take one care more often we can save a lot of money and the environment.

sustainability blog post #1

Right now in our house we are not helping the environment in any way at all except for the fact that we recycle and wear/ drink organic products. Right now in our house we use too much energy like we leave lights on that do not have to be on and we leave the TV on when we are not watching.
In the Waste department we are pretty good because we recycle cans and bottles but we use paper plates way too much when we should be using ceramic plates and save the trees. Also right now in our house we have a lot of old computer's that we have not disposed because we are going to send it in so it gets recycled cleanly.
In our house we waste water by taking long showers when we could be taking shorter showers instead. We also have dishwasher and washing machine, which use up a lot of water because we wash clothes a lot.
We create lots of traffic in our house because we have three cars which all have low miles per gallon. Sometimes during summer and Christmas break we are running three cars because my brother is home but a lot of times after basketball or volleyball practice we car pool with my friends who live near me.
To me sustainability means the environment is running cleanly and that people on earth are not running on oil but they are running on bio fuel. To me it also means that people on earth are living and thinking green so they are doing things that will help the environment. Sustainability's also means to me that the earth will last for a long time with humans living on it and having a balance between all ecosystems.
The first are I want to target is Water consumption because I think that my families showers are way to long and we wash clothes and dishes to much. One way our family can target this problem is take showers effectively by getting wet then turning off the water and then soaping and then finally turn the water on and rinse off. This way I can take as long as I want and I can hardly use and water. If at least my dad and I do this we can save so much water. Another way we can target water consumption is by not washing clothes as much. We can wash maybe one or two times less a week and we can save so much water this way.
The other area I am going to target is food, I have already started to more sustainable by buying organic drinks like organic acai smoothies from the market and also organic soy milk. This reduces the amount of pesticides on earth. Also a way of going green is buying organic vegetables instead of frozen veggies. Our family is starting to buy more local fresh foods like from Aloha salad, which grows their own salad, and from a local fish market. I am also trying to be more sustainable by wearing organic clothes, which is a tad, more expensive and a lot thinner then regular cotton but it is the little things that matter the most.

shakespeare sonnet 60 analysis

Shakespeare Sonnet 60

Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore,
So do our minutes hasten to their end;

Each changing place with that which goes before,
In sequent toil all forwards do contend.

Nativity, once in the main of light,
Crawls to maturity, wherewith being crown'd,
Crooked elipses 'gainst his glory fight,
And Time that gave doth now his gift confound.

Time doth transfix the flourish set on youth
And delves the parallels in beauty's brow,
Feeds on the rarities of nature's truth,
And nothing stands but for his scythe to mow:
And yet to times in hope my verse shall stand,
Praising thy worth, despite his cruel hand.

Paraphrase:

First quatrain: As the waves break to the shore so do our time on earth come closer to the end. This means that the waves come fast to the shore and life is short so you must enjoy it.

Second quatrain: Not to sure what it is saying but I think like how you make things in the sand but the waves come and wash it away and just like your life once you are washed away people forget about you.

Third quatrain: when you are born you get all the attention, when you start getting older you get more power, the bad side of you comes out and fights because you have to prove yourself. I don’t really understand this part to much but I think it is saying that you don’t get as much attention when you are older but the true side of you comes out.

Fourth quatrain: As your body grows older and your looks go away, that is when your real side comes out the part of you that makes you special, and that death can take you at anytime even though life is so great you can die at any moment.

summary

Summarizer CH. 5-8
Chapters 5-8 reveal what really goes on during the weekends at Pencey Prep and the True identity of Holden. In the beginning of chapter 5 Holden talks about the steak dinner they serves that is junk but the serve it so the parents of the children would be impressed. After that Holden, Ackley, and Mal decide to see a movie but when they get there Mal and Ackley have already seen the movie so they just eat food. When they get back from the eating Holden goes back to his room and decides to work on the composition that Stradlater asked to do for him. He writes it about his brother Allie who died of Leukemia and when he did die what Holden did, like break windows. Chapter 6: Stradlater comes back from his date and reads the composition that he told Holden to write for him. He is mad with it because he wrote it about his brother and Stradlater cannot really turn it in because he doesn’t have a brother named Allie. Then Stradlater says that this is why he is getting expelled, after Stradlater says this remark Holden takes the paper and rips it up into shreds. Minutes later there is tension going on between the two and Holden asks Stradlater about the date and Stradlater refuses to tell him what happened so Holden attacks Stradlater but Stradlater pins him to the floor but Holden still keeps talking and Stradlater knocks him in his face giving him a nose bleed. After this Holden leaves and goes into Ackley's room.
Chapter 7: When entering Ackley's room Holden trips over all the shoes on the ground. After this Holden and Ackley start talking for a while and asks if he can sleep on Ackley's roommates bed. That right Holden decides to stay in New York before he goes home so his parents wont be as mad when they see him. Holden goes back to his room and packs his things quickly and starts to walk out and when he is walking out he cries a little and on the way out he yells "Sleep tight, ya morons" which everyone heard. Chapter 8: Holden decides to walk to the train station instead of call a taxi because nobody would see him walking. When he gets on the train he sits next to Ernest Morrow's mother who he hates. Once he starts talking to him his lying side comes out and tells her that his name is Rudolph Schmidt and when she asks him why he is leaving Pencey Prep he tells her that he is getting a brain tumor removed.

Punahou true of phony

Punahou School's website is not a phony, it shows what great facilities this school has like Old School Hall and Cooke hall which show that Punahou is a very old school and very prestige's. Punahou's website shows picture of a very green and clean campus and it really is that clean most of the time and it also shows kids having fun and working together which we do at this school a lot. On the front page it has people playing the cello in the orchestra, which shows that this school has a very good music programs, which it does. The page has the history about Punahou, which writes about the long tradition of this great school and has pictures of the science center and the quad. Punahou's website is not phony it really shows what great facilities we have, how clean it is, kids having fun, and people working together for a common goal, which makes Punahou's website true.

If you really want to hear about it

"If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth."

"Early in my life when I was young I had just about everything I wanted except love. I got a lot of toys and things that I did not really care about but my parents were never really home and sometimes nobody would care for me even at a very young age. You see they were always out and when I was young I really never understood why.

"One day my father came home and was acting kind of strange and he smelled really bad, nothing I had ever seen before. I looked at him and I said, "Father what's wrong."
"shut up" he said "come here" at that point I was very scared and he grabbed me by my shirt and dragged me into the living room where he started to hit me. I tried to defend myself but he kept hitting me until my mother came in "get off him, what are you doing?" she said "Shut up Marry, go get me a drink." He ordered her. After he said that he finally stopped. Later that night some men came and took him away I did not know who they were but my mother was crying and very said.

In the 4th grade our class started to read a book named David Copperfield, it was a book about a boy who his parents treated him very badly and never loved him. In a sense it reminded me of my life and how I had to do everything on my own.

My dad returned about 6 months later and at that point I had realized that he had went to jail for selling drugs and some of my friends told me that he had been involved with a mafia. At that point I did not rally understand that concept but I did know that the mafia were a bunch of people that kill other men. So that was the reason why he had not been home and the reason why I never really saw him. But that did not answer the question about my mother, she would make me do everything in the house when she was home, like wash the dishes, make dinner, and wash the clothes and one day I had not done one of those things and she started to hit me wit a meter stick that I used for measuring. She also brought weird men home when my father was in jail and she was always out leaving me all alone.

One night in my house everyone was home and it was very late, I heard gunshots hitting our house. My dad was yelling and I had realized that it was the mafia shooting, luckily none of us got shot but it really made me scared to think that in my own house I am not safe. My father put on his coat and ran outside holding his gun and my mother and I heard gunshots coming and people screaming we thought my father had been shot. Dead silence after, but my father walks in the house "took care of those a**holes."

The next day at school I heard that my father had killed one my best friends fathers. My best friend was incredibly mad at me, he threatened my life and my fathers. he told me that my father had killed hundreds of people in his career, I was utterly shocked when I heard this.

A couple of weeks later my friend who my father killed his father told me to watch my fathers back tonight. I knew they were coming to get him but I did not care because my father did not talk to me or spend time with me very much. So that night I was sitting in my room and I hear a car pull up and I hear the door opening. I knew it was the men coming for my father but I wasn’t going to warm my father because I had lost all my friends and everyone knew me as the killers son. I heard them break down the door "get him" they mafia men said. I heard bullets firing and my mother was yelling. When they left I came outside I saw my father dead but I did not cry because I did not care because of what he done painted and image on me.

A couple of days later I paid a couple of men in the back alley and said "thanks." That’s right I had paid the mafia to kill my father but I live with this dark secrect that I had never shared til now…..
