lit circle lexicographer ch 1-4

1. ostracized (page 3 2nd paragraph) = excluded from society
2. grippe (page 3 3rd paragraph) = sick
3. they gave me frequent warning to start applying myself, especially around midterms. = this phrase shows how lazy he is and not caring. (page 4, 1st)
4. "Because I had all that Beowulf and Lord Randal Mye Son stuff when I was at the Whooton School. I mean I didn’t have to do any work in English at all hardly, except write compositions once in a while. (Page 10 paragraph 2) = this phrase shows that he only passed one class because he had already read the books.
5. Innumerable (page 11 paragraph 5) = very numerous
6. Qualms (page 14 paragraph 1) = a disturbing feeling
7. "I left the goddam foils and stuff on the subway." (page 20 paragraph 4) = this passage shows that he somewhat cared about the fencing gear and felt bad about loosing it.
8. Chiffonier (page 20 paragraph 2) = a chest of drawers with a mirror on top
Sadistic (page 22 paragraph 1) = extremely cruel
9. I'm the most terrific liar you ever saw in your life (page 16 paragraph 1) = this shows that Holden is sort of a rebel and he says that he lies about everything that is why he doesn’t have a lot of friends.
10. Vitalis (page 31 paragraph 3) = hair care product
11. Annex (page 31 paragraph 2) = territory
12. "I thought she went to Shipley. I could of sworn she went to Shipley" (page 33 paragraph 1) = this quote shows that Holden knows her and that he is scared to see her again because something happened a long time ago.
13. "Don’t knock yourself out or anything, but just don’t make it descriptive as hell. Okay?" (page 34 paragraph 7) = this quote shows that Stradlater knows that Holden is smart but he doesn’t try hard because if he was dumb he wouldn’t be able to make it descriptive.
14. Houndstooth jacket (page 25 paragraph 7) = a thick jacket made for cold conditions
15. Vicks nose drops (Page 7 paragraph 3) = medication used for certain types of colds
16. That is all I know about the Egyptians. I cant seem to get very interested in them although your lectures are very interesting. (page 12 paragraph 3) = this is what he wrote on his exam paper, Holden says he did not write anything because he did not find the Egyptians interesting which means if there is something interesting to him he might excel in it.
17. Lagoon (page 13 paragraph 2) = An area of shallow water separated from the sea by low sandy dunes.
18. Shooting the bull (page 13 paragraph 2) = To talk in a relaxed way about things that are not important.
19. "I mean it. I'll be all right. I'm just going through a phase right now. Everybody goes through phases and all, don’t they?" (Page 15 paragraph 1) = Holden is blaming his laziness and flunking four classes on a phase that he is going through, Holden has a excuse for pretty much everything.
20. Rostrum (Page 17 paragraph 1) = Any platform, stage, or the like, for speaking.
